What sets them apart: Each transverse process has a transverse foramen, and only cervical vertebrae have one. The spinous processes of C2 to C6 are short and end in split (bifid) tips. The articular pillar is the short column of bone between the superior and inferior articular processes.
Which projection shows the openings: The intervertebral foramina open forward at 45° to the midsagittal plane, so a 45° oblique shows them. The zygapophyseal joints sit at 90° to the midsagittal plane, so they show on a true lateral.
