Exam category: Safety → Radiation Protection
Why it matters: Your protection also depends on the room you work in: barrier design, the fluoroscopy suite's required protective features, exposure-rate ceilings, and what to do when there is no room at all on a mobile exam.
Protection here comes from the room rather than from the person: a shielded room designed around who stands where, a fluoroscopy suite with its own required equipment, and the mobile exam, where the room's protections are gone and procedure has to replace them.
The walls of an x-ray room are lined with shielding sized to what actually reaches them. There are two kinds:
The control booth the technologist stands behind is a secondary barrier: the primary beam is never aimed at it, so only scatter and leakage ever reach it — which is exactly why the useful beam must never be directed toward the operating console.
