- Use the picture. Pair words with diagrams and images. Two memory traces — verbal and visual — are easier to retrieve than one. This is why a labeled diagram beats a paragraph for anatomy.
What to mostly stop doing
Rereading, highlighting, and passively summarizing are the three most popular study methods and among the least effective. They're seductive because they're easy and the material gets familiar — and familiarity feels like mastery. It isn't. Recognizing a page you've highlighted five times is not the same as producing the answer on a blank exam. This trap even has a name: the fluency illusion.

There is no credible evidence that matching study to your "style" — visual, auditory, kinesthetic — improves learning. It's been directly tested and it keeps failing. - Flowtime. No fixed timer at all: work until your focus genuinely fades, note how long you lasted, then take a proportional break. Good if rigid timers annoy you or you tend to hit real flow.
The radiography angle: a 2026 review looking at timed study for anatomy found that the classic 25-minute Pomodoro block is probably too short for complex, spatial anatomical material — you're just getting into it when the timer goes off. Studying with ADHD
If you have ADHD, none of the above changes — but which methods you can sustain does. ADHD isn't a knowledge problem; it's an executive-function and reward problem: working memory, sustained attention, getting started, sensing time passing, and a brain wired for immediate payoff over distant rewards.
Here's the lucky part: the highest-evidence study methods are also the most ADHD-friendly ones. Instant-feedback practice questions, gamified flashcards, interleaving (built-in novelty), and short blocks all deliver the frequent feedback and variety an ADHD brain needs to stay engaged. The low-value methods — rereading, hour-long highlighting, passive lectures — are also the ones most likely to lose you. The science and the accommodation point the same way.
Practical adaptations:
- Get it out of your head and onto a screen or page. Checklists, a decided-in-advance plan for today's session, visible progress. Don't spend willpower deciding what to do — spend it doing.
- Use a visible timer and keep blocks short. A countdown you can see fights time-blindness, and "just 20 minutes" beats the paralysis of starting. Starting is the hardest part; make it small.
- Chase immediate wins. Streaks, points, progress bars, checking a box, getting this one question right now. That's what converts "pass the boards in three months" (motivationally invisible) into something your brain will actually work for.
- Move. Fidgeting, pacing while you recite, standing, a walk between blocks — for many ADHD brains, movement raises focus. Don't force stillness.
- Shrink working-memory load. Write everything down, one concept at a time, lean on diagrams instead of holding things in your head.
- Study with someone ("body doubling"). Working alongside another person, even silently on a call, is one of the most reliable ways to start and stay on task.
- Be kind to yourself about it. A missed session is a data point, not a character flaw. The shame spiral causes more avoidance than the ADHD does. Reframe and restart.
One honest note: for a lot of people, managing ADHD includes working with a clinician. These strategies stand on their own and work alongside any medical plan — they're not a replacement for one.
